Come with me

I love ‘The Message’ paraphrase and it’s take on Matthew 4:19. You know the verse that Jesus beckons to Peter and Andrew while they are fishing (unsuccessfully) and says to them ‘Come follow me…’  Here is how the Message puts it

Jesus said to them, “Come with me. I’ll make a new kind of fisherman out of you. I’ll show you how to catch men and women instead of perch and bass.”

Any good fisherman will tell you that the best way to catch a fish is to have the right bait.  Have something that will attract the fish’s attention.  Something that will make it say, hey look over there. That is what we as Christ followers should do as well. We should be ‘attractive’ to the people that we are trying to attract. I do not mean physical attractiveness, but those inner qualities that the fruit of the Spirit provide.

Someone that needs love, will be attracted to someone displaying love.  Someone needing peace, will be attracted to someone showing peace (even in hard times). The same can be said of the rest of the fruit found in Galatians 5:22-23. Jesus taught His disciples to be like Him and that is what we should do in order to attract people to Him.
