Do You want to be made well?

John 5:1-12 opens with the scene of a paralyzed man sitting at the Bethesda Pool in Jerusalem. The reason he is sitting there is explained by John, that an angel would from time to time stir up the water and the first to get in was healed of his ailment. This man had been paralyzed for 38 years according to the Bible.

Enter into the scene Jesus, he approaches the man and asks him, ‘Do you want to be made well?’. I am not sure the look on the man’s face, but I imagine it could have been one of shock because, I do not think he knew who Jesus was.  So he replied to Jesus that he did but someone always beat him into the pool. Jesus then showed him who He was. Jesus took control of the situation and commanded the man to walk, and HE DID.

I recount that story, because we often struggle with issues in life. Whether those issues are health related, or a sin we struggle with. We constantly fight to do it ourselves and beat it ourselves. But the reality of the matter is, that Jesus is asking us “Do you want my help?”. He is offering us His hand of hope and so often we are reluctant to take it. In our humanity and pride we would rather do it ourselves. Instead He wants to humble ourselves before Him, so we can then be lifted up by Him.

No matter what you are facing, Jesus has his Hand extended!
