Bread of Life

In John 6:22-59 we read a few statements by Jesus that made the religious establishment roll. The most important of these statements is found in verse 58, where Jesus says this

This is the bread which came down from heaven—not as your fathers ate the manna, and are dead. He who eats this bread will live forever.

The bread Jesus was talking about was himself. He was telling the people that they needed him, that they would need the sacrifice that he would provide in a little while. They needed to eat of that sacrifice, not literally but spiritually, and must identify with the sacrifice.

In the Jewish sacrificial system, the person offering the sacrifice would identify with the sacrifice, making it their ‘stand in’. In this case Jesus offered the sacrifice, and he allows us to identify with it, at no cost of our own. So when he says eat the bread of life, he is allowing us to freely identify with His perfect sacrifice, and allowing us to belong to him.

Thank You Jesus, that you are my bread of life.
